What are photochromic lenses for?
What does a photochromic lens do?
A photochromic lens is a lens that has the characteristic of adapting to the amount of UV (ultraviolet). In fact, invisible UV rays are omnipresent in greater or lesser quantities depending on the weather. When they increase, photochromic lenses adapt by darkening. This provides complete protection against UV rays by protecting against glare because they absorb all UVA and UVB rays (the main UV rays). The lens darkens, then returns to its original tint when it is no longer exposed to UV, so it adapts perfectly to the light.
Photochromic lenses bridge the gap between different times of day and changing weather conditions. So with your photochromic glasses, you only need one pair to know you'll be protected no matter what the conditions.
For whom?
They are primarily designed for people who want to combine comfort with a reduction in eye strain and of course glare from the sun. Adapting to all conditions, photochromic glasses are particularly recommended for sportsmen & women and athletes in search of performance and better sensations, and they are also very appreciable in everyday life and will make your life easier.
For sportsmen & women :
- ideal for all outdoor sports, especially cycling, mountain biking, running, trail running, hiking and triathlon
- one pair all day long, no need to worry about the weather or nightfall
- practical for forest or undergrowth, the lens adapts permanently for continuous protection
In everyday life :
- only one pair for all outdoors activities
- recommended for photosensitive people
Pros and cons of photochromic lenses
Main advantages :
- practical, one pair is all you need, even if the weather is changeable
- continuous UV protection, your eyes are perfectly protected in all conditions
- easy transition between light and shade, dawn/dusk and day light, overcast and full sun, indoor and outdoor
Main disadvantages :
- variable reaction time depending on the brand (generally between 15 and 30 seconds)
- reaction time can be longer depending on the temperature - note: Julbo offers lenses with NTS technology that react regardless of the temperature!
- some lenses darken less well in the car because the windshield blocks a large part of the UV rays
